The craft beer movement is getting big in Japan and microbreweries and tap rooms are springing up at ski resorts for intrepid beer connoisseurs / snow trippers to discover.

Myoko Kogen Beer

Hailing from Niigata, this craft beer label brews its beer using imported European malt & hops and the region’s pure water.

Myoko Kogen Brewery and Tatra-Kan Beer Hall at the base of Ikenotaira Ski Resort is a good place to try their brews. The whole lineup Pilzner, Weizen and Dark ales are on tap including seasonal specials such as the Haneuma IPA and Golden Ale. Keen drinkers can opt for an All You Can Drink option. The Buffet with its huge range of Japanese cuisine is quite popular amongst snow trippers. You can also try Myoko Kogen beer at the restaurants in Ikenotaira Ski Resort and the various liquor stores in Akakura Onsen village.


Otaru Beer

Otaru Beer is a brewery in Zenibako in the port town of Otaru who make German style beers. When you are visiting Otaru, make sure to drop by at the Otaru Beer Warehouse where you can sample their brews by the picturesque Otaru canal. The warehouse doubles as an impressive beer hall serving traditional Bavarian food & snacks. In Sapporo city, the company operates Leibspeise pub & restaurant which serves similar fare alongside their beers.


Tamamura Honten / Shiga Kogen Beer

Located in the Shiga Kogen snow country, Tamamura Honten is a sake brewery which has expanded into beers. They make several beers under the Shiga Kogen brand as well as a lineup of seasonal offerings. Visit the brewery in Yamanouchi or the teppa ‘tap’ room during Winter to have their beer at its freshest. You can also find their beers at most liquor stores in the Nagano region.

Libushi is a brewpub located in the Nozawa Onsen ski village making their own craft beers. You can sample their range at the taproom but get in quick as the place is tiny and it’s a popular apres ski haunt.


Niseko Brewing

Niseko brewing is a microbrewery located in Niseko town. They have a core lineup of 6 brews, and you must try the Ezo Porter which is brewed with local Hokkaido ingredients - salmon, shitake mushrooms and kelp. The taphouse and restaurant on the second floor has great views of the mountains and serves dishes matched to the beers.
